Just off the top of my head, he did The Great Escape, The Americanization of Emily, Support Your Local Sheriff, Marlowe, Support Your Local Gunfighter, Victor/Victoria and Murphy's Romance, all but the last floating around the house on DVD or video tape. He's one of those actors I could watch in anything -- and probably have. I'll definitely write about both him and some of the movies he was in.Mythical Monkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11330587602682498820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6924668268143757716.post-4852890953747271512009-10-23T11:41:47.457-04:002009-10-23T11:41:47.457-04:00This was a great post. (Admittedly, that photo helped somewhat.) It also turns out that I had seen Joan Blondell in a movie after all. She was in a James Garner western spoof called "Support Your Local Gunfighter" that I first saw at a drive-in when I was 10. By the way, I hope that when your blog gets to the 1960's and '70's (early next decade, perhaps?) you'll do something on James Garner. Mostly a TV guy, but had some good movie roles too.Mister S.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6924668268143757716.post-59680336626291564002009-10-22T11:00:48.656-04:002009-10-22T11:00:48.656-04:00I actually approached Joan Blondell more from lupn...I actually approached Joan Blondell more from lupner's path than the Mule's -- first through Here Come The Brides, then The Cincinnati Kid (1965), then A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (where she plays a typical Joan Blondell character but fifteen years older than her earliest work). And throw in Grease which I actually saw in the theater in 1978.

It wasn't until I started following "If Charlie Parker Was A Gunslinger, There'd Be A Whole Lot Of Dead Copycats" that I started revisiting the idea of Joan Blondell as ever having been young. And then watching all these movies chronologically has allowed me to see all these stars when they were young and just starting out, full of energy and promise.

Being reintroduced to Blondell through her pre-Code work has been one of the real payoffs.Mythical Monkeyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11330587602682498820noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6924668268143757716.post-7694888905493061312009-10-22T08:17:58.772-04:002009-10-22T08:17:58.772-04:00Since my first exposure to Joan B. was in later ye...Since my first exposure to Joan B. was in later years, was so surprised the first time I saw her as a sassy young thing -- thanks to one of my brothers, who was going on about how beautiful and sexy she was. Still haven't seen many of her earlier films -- must see more movies, must see more movies -- but she was obviously one of the great ones, always coming across as a 'real' person, for lack of a better description (as Mister Myth much more eloquently discussed).Lupnernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6924668268143757716.post-53652380614726353802009-10-22T07:53:06.770-04:002009-10-22T07:53:06.770-04:00I like this choice, you New England-born, Hawaii-b...I like this choice, you New England-born, Hawaii-bred film- writer you!

My initial introduction to Joan Blondell was, not surprisingly for a man my age, Here Come The Brides on ABC Television.

My attention was never focused on the Bolt Brothers, but on the overseer of all of those hot young broads.

Sorry, "brides" . . . .

I say "overseer" advisedly; Joan Blondell certainly wasn't a matriarch; she was WAY too saucy for any maternal support.

Alas, I just thought of her as the racy old broad.

Luckily, though, my inquiring mind led me to acquire, at the ripe age of eleven, photos of Ms. Blondell in the altogether. Nude. Naked!

And these weren't publicity stills from a *feature*. . . .

Let's say that my appreciation for, and fixation upon, Ms. Blondell was forever cemented by that acquisition.

man o man o man

As for her pre-Code performances: the movies all run together for me, butI watched as many as I could. In the Olden Times, pre-cable, afternoon and weekend and weekend nights in major metropolitan areas needed PRODUCT, and anything modern was held for theatrical re-release or for more featured television presentation. I remember Ms. Blondell as being BOTH a natural, naturalistic, modern performer, AND a performer whose rhythms and pattersn blended beautifully with the highly-stylized, theatrical performances of many of her fellow performers in the early sound days. SO a modern audience can follow her, riveted, where talented, capable, but dated performances wear thin quickly.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Factoid: In one series of three shots, Ms. Blondell demonstrated that she was about seventy years ahead of her time; some of her personal grooming habits in those photos were shocking and rare; they would, lamentably, fit in with modern women (and many men) today.

Being twisted and precocious paid off in information, I must say . . . .mister muleboyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14367123802128879318noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6924668268143757716.post-15243264575109296912009-10-21T23:09:52.166-04:002009-10-21T23:09:52.166-04:00Wow, you're right.
