Did yesterday's posting of Our Dancing Daughters whet your appetite for more Joan Crawford? Well. Long thought lost, Our Waltzing Whelps would have been the fourth movie in the Joan Crawford Flapper Trilogy. Fortunately, a fragment of this film was recently discovered by me just now in one of my notebooks. So without further fanfare, Our Waltzing Whelps, starring Joan Crawford and Anita Page, filmed in state of the art MonkeyVision.
Very nice, except for the man hands. But now I wonder, how many of these women went all the way to get an acting gig? Pretty dark days all covered in silk.
Yeah, Joan and Anita split the award for best actress -- although I imagine Joan would have simply smacked Anita and run off with the prize. From what I've read, she really didn't like the competition.
Pretty dark days all covered in silk.
Unfortunately, that's true. I think a lot of these guys got off on the power trip, bending a woman to their will. It went far beyond the casting couch. The humiliations guys like Louis Mayer meted out for no other reason than that they could were legendary.
I mean, what kind of a person would tell an actress in front of her mother "sleep with me or I'll ruin your career"?
I can't believe I said the word "booze" in front of a recovering alcoholic.
And if there are any recovering fascists out there, I also apologize for the "Mussolini" reference.
(It's true, by the way. Mussolini wrote Anita Page over a hundred fan letters. I don't think either she or Joan Crawford found him particularly dreamy though.)
Ah the old wire hanger trick! Katies all around -- Best Director & Best Screenwriter too!

ReplyDeleteI don't understand.
I was just letting her know the score . . . .

Also, for anyone with boots or legs who was offended by the term "bootleg," I apologize.
