The Heretofore Unmentioned #1

I'm still on vacation, but that's no reason you should suffer. Some faces from the silent and early sound eras I have somehow failed to parade in front of you:

William S. Hart

Alla Nazimova

Noble Johnson

Pola Negri

Rudolf Klein-Rogge

Lillian Roth

Tom Mix

  1. Excellent! That Rudolf Klein-Rogge snap is particularly haunting. What a face!

  2. I love Rudolf Klein-Rogge in those early Fritz Lang movies -- he so perfectly conveys "mad" and "genius" at the same time.

You should see her in Salome from 1923 -- it was a, well, let's say interesting attempt to film Oscar Wilde's play about the dancer who insisted King Herod cut off John the Baptist's head. Nazimova was 42 playing a teenager, she's completely over-the-top and as a narrative, the movie doesn't work at all, but she has an undeniable presence on the screen. It was one of those experiments that I can't say really worked, but you can't take your eyes off her.

  5. In the photo from "The Realization of a Negro's Ambition" (Lincoln, 1916) the man is Clarence Brooks, NOT Noble Johnson.
