Today's Oscar Trivia #4

Kerr Trouble Deborah Kerr holds the record for most Best Actress nominations (six) without ever winning. Her first came for what 1949 drama costarring Spencer Tracy?

Like Kissing Your Sister Only twice in the history of the Oscars have acting awards ended in a tie, once for Best Actor and once for Best Actress. Who tied with Katharine Hepburn {The Lion in Winter) for Best Actress in 1968?

As usual, no prizes for getting it right, other than a free plug for your blog or favorite charity in the comments section.

Next year, I'm going to insist TCM offer up tougher questions for me to steal ...

  4. This is such a lovely photo of Deborah Kerr.

She was such a lovely woman. We remember the 1950s for the blonde bombshells -- Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield, Mamie van Doren -- but for my money, it was Deborah Kerr who was the decade's real beauty.

  5. I understand that the rules in 1932 meant that both March and Beery ended up with Oscars. But I wish the Academy would stop calling that a tie. March won. Beery finished close enough that he also got an Oscar.

  6. That's a good point, Erik. Under the rules of the day, anytime the contestants finished within three votes of each other, the result was deemed a tie. March actually finished first.

I've also read that the race was called a tie only because Beery made such a fuss at the ceremony after March won.

As for the Hepburn-Streisand tie, usually an actor had to be a member of the Academy for five years before getting to vote on the Oscars, but the rules were waved for nominee Streisand, who otherwise wouldn't have been eligible to vote. Presumably the she voted for herself and that race did end in a tie.

    Or so I've read.

  7. I've read the same thing on the Streisand tie.

By the way - absolutely love the Deborah Kerr photo you used today.

  8. Deborah Kerr was such a lovely woman; the only movie, however, where she didn't look so lovely was the atrocious John Huston segments (actually, all the segments were atrocious) for the 1967 spy spoof Casino Royale.

It used to be on YouTube, but is no longer, so here's a "recap" of it that's funny enough to take your mind off the pain of what it's describing: http://www.agonybooth.com/recaps/Casino_Royale_1967.aspx

  9. Oh, yeah, Casino Royale. Beware of any movie touted as "zany."
