Hokey Smoke, Bullwinkle! The Monkey Wins A Prize!

Remember the Great Citizen Kane Debate that True Classics hosted a couple of weeks back? The one with prizes, such as Citizen Kane on Blu-Ray, for the best essay?

I'll let the good people at True Classics speak for themselves:

The entries that we received for the Great Citizen Kane Debate were above and beyond our expectations. After quite a bit of reading (and re-reading) and discussion amongst ourselves, we have determined the prize winners!

The voting was quite close, particularly between first and second place, and we want to commend each and every blogger who participated for writing some truly thought-provoking, intriguing entries.

Without further ado …

First Place: The Mythical Monkey (A Mythical Monkey Writes About the Movies) for his insightful and humorous entry, Citizen Kane: Best Ever? Monkey raises some interesting questions about the film, and we felt that his approach to the debate was extremely well-written, refreshingly honest, logical, and heartfelt ...

As I told True Classics in an e.e. cummings style e-mail last night: "holy cow! i wasn't expecting that. considering the level of competition -- there were a lot of really well-written essays -- this is a genuine honor. thanks so very much."

That's not false modesty, just a simple statement of fact. But I'll take it. I make it a policy never to turn down free DVDs.

In second place was Rachel from The Girl with the White Parasol. Third, was Jill Kittenbiscuits of Sittin' On A Backyard Fence.

  4. Man.

You will make up anything to avoid producing any real content here, won't you?

    What?

    Oh.

    Congratulations. . . .

  6. Congratulations! Your article was indeed insightful and wonderfully written. I imagine you having written this victory post from a podium in front of a blown up picture of your face, as a boy asks his mother, "Maw...did Mythical Monkey win the Great Citizen Kane Debate yet?"
"Not yet, son. Not yet. Oh, wait. Yes, Mythical Monkey did win, son."

  8. Happy for you Mr. Monkey,
You are truly a good writer.
I have had the movie for years.
Orson did some great new tricks with the camera.

They say Rosebud was what Hearst called Marlyn Davie's privite parts, I had to see it. I remember the first time I saw it with my Mama.
    Ta ta for now
    great subject.

  9. Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the support.

I confess, I didn't write the Kane post with a prize in mind -- True Classics raised a question that I found myself turning over in my head and I wanted to weigh in.

As for Mark Bourne's request, my Declaration of Principles:

    1) Oh, my God! -- you're about to jibber jabber about jibber jabber!

    2) There's a little monkey in all of us -- especially if you just ate lunch at a substandard zoo.

    and, above all

    3) There are no wrong answers, only movies you haven't seen yet.

  10. the waning energy, the missed opportunities and the nagging sense as your days grow dim that nothing you've accomplished is going to make a damn bit of difference when you're gone -- hell yeah! Who WOULDN'T want to settle down with a bowl of popcorn and enjoy this one? :-)

I'm 100 percent certain i'm the only visitor to the Monkey in HISTORY who has not seen Citizen Kane. But after many a year with no TV I now have Netflix PLUS a 42" flatscreen PLUS the Monkey as my guide, so things are changing ...

P.S. Congrats, Myth. It's a great piece of writing. And I too loved "How to Build a Boat" ...

I was sitting here alone in the office when I read that comment, and I laughed out loud and now the dog is looking at me like I'm a nut -- with that cocked-head RCA-Victor dog look.

By the way, my Kane essay probably did you a disservice, Who, by making the movie sound like a dreary dirge. It's actually witty and spritely and a rousing good time, a good yarn.

And without it, the first cast of Saturday Night Live could never have done Citizen Kane Part 2, in which it's revealed Kane said something after "Rosebud" -- "Henri." And after even more investigation, two more words, "with mustard."

Hmm. Rosebud Henri with mustard ...

  12. I think it wrong to let this great evolution go unnoticed:

your adoption and integration of the sock monkey is genius.

I know that Citizen Kane was the topic, but art is ever-changing, ever-growing. And Roger, that sock-monkey is you!

  15. Hey, lupner! Great to hear from you! I can say with absolute metaphysical certitude that you are my favorite pal who goes by the name lupner. How are you doing? Maybe we can all squeeze in a baseball game this year.

I feel a little like a sock monkey at the moment, with a head stuffed with fluff. I am in no mood to think or work.
