Here, by the way, is the list of the actresses Luise Rainer defeated for her back-to-back wins:
1936 Irene Dunne (Theodora Goes Wild) Gladys George (Valiant is the Word for Carrie) Carole Lombard (My Man Godfrey) Norma Shearer (Romeo and Juliet)
1937 Irene Dunne (The Awful Truth) Greta Garbo (Camille) Janet Gaynor (A Star is Born) Barbara Stanwyck (Stella Dallas)
Norma Shearer and Janet Gaynor at least had already won Oscars, but Irene Dunne, Carole Lombard, Barbara Stanwyck and Greta Garbo never did. And it's not like those actresses got nominated for fluff -- it was some of the best work of their careers ...
Interesting -- Rainer beat Dunne twice, a pair of GGs (initials, not cup sizes!) and two Oct. 6 babies (Lombard and Gaynor). There's probably something linking Shearer and Stanwyck, but for the love of me I can't think what it is.
I remember you Luise Rainer.
ReplyDeleteLuise must be staring up at the lady who should have won that first Oscar of hers...
