In case you're wondering, that's Jason Verlander of the Detroit Tigers on the mound throwing his warm-up pitches between innings. In the on deck circle trying to get his measure is, I think, Derrick Robinson of the Washington Nationals, a minor league outfielder trying to make the club as a left-handed bat option.
One of the great things about Spring Training is you can StubHub great seats for relatively little money -- we wound up sitting on the opposite end of the row from Mike Rizzo, the Nats general manager.
Actually, I went back and consulted Katie-Bar-The-Door's scorebook -- I'm 99.% sure that's Derrick Robinson in the ondeck circle, but Verlander isn't throwing warm-up pitches, he's throwing to Michael Taylor who is about to hit the first of two monster home runs.
Spring training is the best. In fact, I'm there now with my son who's 13. I told him it was a "special trip, just for him" but I think he's figured out that it's really for me.

ReplyDeleteI love Spring Training.
ReplyDeleteYour son will treasure these moments. One day. Probably when you're dead.
I kid.
My dad and I used to do things together when I was a teenager, mostly go to the movies -- among other things, we saw The Sting.
Those are still the best times of my youth and I imagine have a lot to do with why I write about movies -- thanks, Pa!
