1986 Alternate Oscars

My choices are noted with a ★. Historical Oscar winners are noted with a ✔.

I think you know how much I love Paul Newman. I've nominated him for seven alternate Oscars — a ton in my universe — and had him winning for The Hustler in 1961. But even at the time, I felt like the Academy gave him the Oscar for The Color of Money to make up for nearly three decades worth of snubs rather than because it was a stand-out performance. I mean, personally, I wouldn't put it in his top ten. So I'm skipping over him so I can recognize some other fine actors who gave more dynamic performances in 1986.

  1. Since we happened to hit the same year on the same day, thought I would give you my link (through my name) to my post and maybe give you something to read while you're on this year if you're still recovering. Hope you're doing well.

  2. Hey, Erik, great to hear from you! I hope you're doing well and well on the road to recovery after your own cancer.

I got some good news on Friday -- the doctors had been kicking around the notion that I might need more chemo, but the oncologists (two of them) said "no." So I'm on the road to recovery.

Last night was also a big milestone, the first night since April 14 I didn't sleep attached to a feed bag. I should be tube free by mid-June, and then it's just monitoring from here on out. Why, if I'm still here in five years, the doctor even said she'd declare me cured!

Thanks for the link to your 1986 post. I always enjoy your writing and as you know, I lean heavily on your insights into film and Oscars.

Hope you're feeling good again and having a great Spring!

  3. From the "I Wonder if this is Just Me" Department - I don't have the same affection for Ferris Bueller that I did 'back in the day' - yeah in 1986 he was just a young rebel "fightin' the man"; now he strikes me more as a smartass kid screwing with people just trying to do their jobs.

    Now, get off my lawn

  4. You know, I have to admit I would never treat the maitre d' the way Ferris did. And what about poor Abe Froman, the sausage king of Chicago? Where does he sit when he finally shows up for lunch?

    And that poor car ...
