Nominees For Best Picture Of 1932-33 (Foreign Language)
Boudu Saved From Drowning (prod. Michel Simon) Liebelei (prod. Herman Millakowsky) The Testament Of Dr. Mabuse (prod. Fritz Lang and Seymour Nebenzal) Vampyr (prod. Carl Theodor Dreyer and Julian West) Zero For Conduct (prod. Jean Vigo)
Crap! This is like one of my recurring nightmares where i'm back in college & it's Finals but I haven't gone to any of the classes! Should I quick see them all? Wait, I know ... I'll, scouts honor, track down & rent the winner ... now don't lead me astray you Myth Monkey Followers :-)
Having seen all of them. It's a toss up between Zero For Conduct which is very influential and The Testament Of Dr. Mabuse which has one of my favorite killings in it. Vampyr is overrated, Liebelei is in such terrible condition that you really can't judge it fairly, and Boudu Saved From Drowning is not the best Renoir around by far.
Katie-Bar-The-Door will be on the road this week on business, so it's just me, the dog and five foreign movies to re-watch. Unlike my essays for best drama and best comedy, which are nearly done, I haven't written word one about the foreign language picture. So I have an opportunity to revisit them all and make a final decision.
Will there be a poll for this one? Because in spite of great critical love for both Zero for Conduct and Boudu, my winner is Vampyr by a long ways.
ReplyDeleteI've only seen The testament and Liebelei, i enjoyed Liebelei a bit more - great film.

ReplyDeleteA heavy burden, but one I'm willing to shoulder.

I'll do my best not to let you down, Who.
This one is easy. Zero de Conduit is not only the best foreign language film, but the best overall movie of 1933.

ReplyDeleteVampyr for me by far, although to be fair I haven't seen Liebelei. Great blog and pics, thanks for sharing.
