The final contest seesawed back and forth for days, but in the end, Bette Davis defeated Barbara Stanwyck, 49-47, to win the 2014 Favorite Classic Movie Actress Tournament. I imagine she'll cherish this victory over even her two Academy Awards.
She's the tourney's fourth winner, joining Irene Dunne, Ginger Rogers and Carole Lombard in the winner's circle. Congratulations, Ms. Davis! Click here to head on over to Monty's site All Good Things and read more about it.
Hey Myth! I just watched a Bette Davis movie last week! Seriously, this is a rare accomplishment for moi: "All About Eve." Celeste Holm stole the show as far as I was concerned. The means well but oops I screwed up type I can always relate to ... OK, that is all. How goes the book?
ReplyDeleteCeleste Holm is great in that movie. She won an Oscar for Gentleman's Agreement in 1947, another fine performance.
ReplyDeleteIf All About Eve is your first Bette Davis movie, you chose well -- it is chock full of quotable lines and the sort of characters you can sink your teeth into. Fun stuff.
Telling you want to follow up with is tough -- I'm partial to Now, Voyager myself, but I'm a fan of sentimental romances so I'm perhaps not the best judge.
The Petrified Forest is talky and stagey but features Humphrey Bogart's first great performance as a gangster on the run, so maybe that.
The book goes. I am Sisyphus rolling a rock up a hill, and I have learned something. Everybody assumes the object of the exercise was to get the rock to the top, but it is in fact, to polish the side of the hill. I have about 45,000 words of sheer poetry so far all done up in a Howard Hawks action-adventure package.
Genius. Or delusion.
In fact, if you want to taste The Petrified Forest before you eat the whole meal, you can check it out here:

But you didn't hear it from me.
Besides all her star roles, I also like Bette Davis in the quieter 'plain jane' role in THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER as Sheridan Whiteside's long-suffering secretary/assistant/verbal punching bag.
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, there was never anyone like Davis in movies and there never will be again. She was one of the very unique ones.
