It's a Hollywood tradition to nominate child actors in the supporting category no matter how much time they spend on the screen or how essential to the story they are. But we here at the Monkey don't give a damn about Hollywood tradition. Haley Joel Osment is the co-lead in The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis, thus the lead actor nomination.

Boy, that is a moustache, isn't it.
By the way, I may be one of the few people on Earth who admits to liking Shakespeare in Love these days even if it's not the best movie of the year. I rank it fourth behind The Big Lebowski, Out of Sight and Saving Private Ryan, in that order.

James Ellroy, author of the novel L.A. Confidential, is one of my favorite writers — wild, jittery, paranoid, cranked on Benzedrine and black coffee, writing twenty-three hours a day. Linear, he is not. That director Curtis Hanson and screenwriter Brian Helgeland were able to pull one of the best movies of the decade out of Ellroy's gloriously convoluted epic is one of the miracles of movie history and a testament to their commitment and craft.

I nominated The English Patient in several categories, but I'll be honest with you, I'm not a fan. I mean, I got it in terms of all its literary tricks, but did I ever care about what was happening on screen? Nuh-uh. And nothing that's happened in the last twenty-plus years makes me think I ever will.
