1939 Alternate Oscars

For reasons I won't go into, I've seen Gone with the Wind in a theater more times than any other movie — eight. That's 32 hours of Gone with the Wind, enough Rhett and Scarlett to last a lifetime.

I won't say it's my favorite movie of all-time (that would be Casablanca, Rio Bravo and a dozen others). But it is a good one ...

My choices are noted with a ★. A tie is indicated with a ✪. Historical Oscar winners are noted with a ✔. Best foreign-language picture winners are noted with an ƒ. A historical winner who won in a different category is noted with a ✱.

I could neither bring myself to vote for GWTW nor vote for any other.

Many say “1939 was the best year ever for movies.” That’s because it WAS pretty fucking great.

You heard it here first .
