1996 Alternate Oscars

I don't have a lot to say about 1996 other than that I didn't care for the Academy's choice for best picture, The English Patient.

Me, I preferred the Coen Brothers' classic noir comedy Fargo instead. Frances McDormand won an Oscar. Steve Buscemi and William H. Macy gave terrific supporting performances. But, you know, if you like The English Patient, go for it, dude.

I nominated The English Patient in several categories, but I'll be honest with you, I'm not a fan. I mean, I got it in terms of all its literary tricks, but did I ever care about what was happening on screen? Nuh-uh. And nothing that's happened in the last twenty-plus years makes me think I ever will.

The Katie-Bar-The-Door Awards (1996)

The English Patient has a lot of fans—after all, it was a popular winner when the Academy gave it the Oscar for best picture—but like Elaine on Seinfeld, I do not count myself among them.

"How could you not love that movie?"

"How about, it sucked?"

As somebody observed at the time, The English Patient is Casablanca turned on its head, with the problems of the world not amounting to a hill of beans to three crazy, mixed-up people. It's okay with me if you love it, but if you're looking for it to win an alternate Oscar, you'll have to read a different blog.
