Happy Birthday To A Couple Of Legends

Clark Gable, who be 110 today ...

... and John Ford, who would be 117.

If I live long enough, I'll write a full biography of each of them, in Gable's case in connection with either It Happened One Night or Gone With The Wind, in Ford's either Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath or The Searchers, maybe all three.

Just one more reason not to have a heart attack while shoveling snow.

As you know, the Mule's father performed in a play in 1939 that was judged by Gable's acting coach [and wife] Josephine Dillon. Ms. Dillon took a shine to MulePoppa, and encouraged him to move to California to pursue film acting. Mulepoppa instead shortly thereafter went to work to keep his three orphaned sisters under one roof.

Although he spoke of it to me only once, his oldest sister confirmed with great recall and detail the play, and Ms. Dillon [who apparently also implored MuleGrandPoppa to help his son in such a move; MuleGrandPoppa was in failing health and his opinions aren't known].

My chances of rivaling Charlie Sheen were shot to hell by the death of my grandparents and my father's shortsightedness [his sisters could'a fended for themselves]. . . .

And since you and I were always destined to be pals, I'd be working on the screenplay for your next blockbuster instead of writing part two of my essay covering 1906-1914. Probably something smart and witty involving car chases, criminal forensics, a vast conspiracy and a breath-taking blonde. With at least one montage coupled with a bombastic pop hit from 2009.

Either that, or you and Ben Stiller would be working on Meet The Little Focker's Parents Part V ...

They have a fondness for "tools-y" outfielders who can't hit -- Termel Sledge, Nook Logan, Ryan Langerhans, Wily Mo Pena, Lastings Milledge, Justin Maxwell, Willie Harris ... and that's not even all of them.
